Why The Hanna Studio?
I’m Meg Hanna. I team up with mission-driven organizations across the landscape and green infrastructure sector to elevate green spaces and the people who care for them.
Cultivating the spaces that shape us has been at the core of what I do from the very beginning. From caring for my community parks to leading urban forestry initiatives and teaching, growing quality green spaces has kept me growing since 2005.
In 2026, I launched The Hanna Studio to lend my expertise to ambitious organizations with agility and drive. Together, we deliver projects with purpose.
To me, the studio is both a place and a frame of mind: a workshop where collaboration stays creative and strong ideas get the follow-through they need..

About me
What energizes me most is turning aspirational ideas into programs that work for people and places.
For 15 years, I worked in municipal green space management across three municipalities in the Greater Montreal area, including seven years as Living Collections Supervisor at the Montreal Botanical Garden. That work led me into teaching, as part of the founding team of instructors for Canada’s first master’s degree in urban forestry at the University of British Columbia, and into standards-setting, leading the Canadian rollout of the world’s first sustainable urban forest management standard with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
I am an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and TRAQ qualified, with an insatiable curiosity for global urban forestry. As a Canadian, I am committed to bilingual service to the sector, in English and French. Volunteerism is woven through my practice, from local green space projects to non-profit board governance.
I bring this unique skillset to every project, turning vision into the difference that we can see and feel in the places we cherish.

Putting Standards into Practice
with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Sustainable forest management and certification are rigorous systems, and complex ones. After SFI launched its Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard, we set out to make it relatable and applicable, distilling the framework into clear, actionable steps, with bilingual tools that urban forest managers can use.
The difference that we can see? Two organizations certified, and a growing roster of universities and municipalities piloting it across Canada and the United States.

Elevating Green Careers in Urban Forestry
with Project Learning Tree Canada
In urban forestry, there is room for everyone who wants to contribute. With PLT Canada, we developed workshops, panels, and webinars connecting young people to green careers, while equipping educators and employers who support them. This included first-ever francophone employer training workshops and youth panels. We also partnered with the American Public Gardens Association and the Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants web series to bring urban forestry to environmental educators.

Translating Global Standards, en français!
with la Société internationale d’arboriculture Québec (SIAQ)
For best practices to stick, they need to reach local audiences. With the SIAQ, we localize the International Society of Arboriculture’s resources for French-speaking arborists and urban foresters, translating technical standards to advance the trade. This spans four published Best Management Practices guides, a fifth underway, and the 470-page Arborists’ Certification Study Guide.

Building Curriculum from the Ground Up
with the University of British Columbia (UBC)
Being the first means trying new approaches and embracing adaptation. For Canada’s first urban forestry master’s program, I designed and delivered UFOR 521, Advances in Arboriculture and Urban Ecology, building an interactive online course from scratch: self-directed modules, recorded and live lectures, and field-based assessment. First delivered online from 2021 to 2024, the course has evolved into in-person learning, which I continue to support.

Convening Leaders while Cultivating Partnership
with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Bring aspirational people together, create the conditions for success, and watch those connections flourish into lasting impact. I led the design and delivery of SFI’s first Urban Forestry Day, bringing established and emerging leaders into one room to learn, network, and strategize about sustainable urban forest management.

with the International Society of Arboriculture
Arboriculture and urban forestry offer rewarding careers, reached by many paths through education, training, apprenticeship, and volunteering. With ISA, we are building a global resource to raise awareness of these fields, demystify the work, and show how people can build purposeful, lifelong careers in the sector.
